Over the past few weeks, questions have arisen surrounding the Kendall County Sheriff’s Gun range. The Kendall County Board, in a continuing effort to increase transparency, presents the following information to clear up any confusion about the Sheriff’s Gun Range. The following questions and answers address concerns about the Sheriff’s Gun Range.

Q – Did the County Board approve a lease for use of the rail road property as a gun range?
A – On May 1, 2012 the Kendall County Board approved a land lease with Illinois Railway LLC for use of the property located at 6925 Route 71. The use of the leased land is for firearms training for all County, State, and Municipal Police agencies and no other purpose.
Q – Does the Kendall County Sheriff’s Gun Range have proper insurance coverage?
A – Kendall County, through their insurer ICRMT, retains worker’s compensation and liability insurance that exceeds the requirements of the land lease with Illinois Railway LLC.
Q – Is the Kendall County Sheriff’s Gun Range inspected by the State of Illinois?
A – The range is inspected annually by the Illinois Law Enforcement and Standards Board.
Q – Does the Kendall County Sheriff’s Gun Range require any local government zoning or permits?
A – The gun range is operated on rail road property and, because of federal preemption, isn’t subject to the local zoning process.
